Quote of the Week

“90% of strategy is execution, after you plant a seed you don’t dig it up the next day to see if it’s growing”

An executive at the first company I worked for shared this with me, and it has stuck with me ever since. We can become impatient when our plan doesn’t yield immediate results, but hesitation, second-guessing, and pivoting are always unproductive. The one who wins is not always the most optimized, but it’s always the one who is the most consistent.

Race: Chicago Marathon (Sunday October 13, 2024)

A Note From Marcelo
I am running the Chicago Marathon for Good Sports. They are a non-for-profit company that aims to give all children the opportunity to participate in sports with quality equipment. The price of sporting equipment can hold back families in having their kids participate in sports and Good Sports is trying to minimize that barrier for families. As someone who grew up playing sports, the mission that Good Sports is on is something I want to be a part of. I made many great friends and memories in participating in sports. I feel that all kids should be given that opportunity and not be limited due to poor quality or no sporting equipment.

I’ve been running for about three years now and almost all of that running was just for cardio purposes. I wouldn’t run more than 3 miles at a time. Then last year I decided to sign up for a marathon with a few of my friends with only 8 weeks to train. I had no idea where to start honestly. I had friends complete marathons recently at this time so I went to them. I absorbed a lot of information through them and just researching training tips. Those 8 weeks I learned a lot about myself physically and mentally. But there is so much more room to grow and with this marathon I can push myself. That’s why I love it, this is something I have so much room to grow as an athlete.

I typically run 12-15 miles a week as of right now. I am going to increase my mileage slowly so that I have a solid base when the real training starts in June for Chicago.

Something We Learned this Week

Elite universities are starting to reinstate the SAT/ACT requirement for college applicants.

Researchers at Dartmouth, found that standardized test scores are the best predictor of a student’s success at Dartmouth, trumping GPA, teacher recommendations, or resumes.

Additionally, the research found that some low-income students were false-negative rejections due to the absence of a submission of their SAT score. Meaning some student’s withheld their scores under the assumption that they would hurt their application. Unfortunately, for these students their standardized test score would have actually been the catalyst to get them accepted.

*Schools have access to a student’s full profile, including their SAT score, after the application process is complete.

Recommendation of the Week

Graham Weaver is a G. He is talented investor and excellent teacher. His words are always wise.

The lecture below should be right up your alley.

Your social circle plays a cr role in shaping your desires and aspirations, largely because you can only desire what you can imagine. My experiences with changing social circles over the years have underscored the malleability of my mind. Essentially, we strive to fit in.

While we can draw inspiration from articles about others getting their dream job or videos of people losing 50+ pounds, it's often difficult to fully grasp these achievements unless we personally know someone who has accomplished similar feats. Consider when was the last time you did something that NO ONE in your immediate circle had attempted before. Reflecting on this question made me realize the extent of our individuality and self-advocacy. It begs the question: How original are we if our ideas are largely influenced by others?

The best approach is to consciously surround yourself with people who embody the qualities and achievements you aspire to. It's important not to keep company for the sake of keeping company. If you desire change, you must change your environment; otherwise, it will change you.

While loyalty and respect for those who have supported you are always important, the methods and influences that propelled you to your current position may not necessarily be the ones that will advance you further. Life is about embracing change, and sometimes that means becoming the person that's needed, rather than the person you already know.
