Quote of the Week

Cynics get to be right, optimists get to be rich

Shaan Puri

Whether your dream is to be financially independent, to run a marathon, or to walk again this quote applies to an endeavor that has a high degree of difficulty.

Cynics will always say…

“You will never be a millionaire”
“You will never be able to complete a marathon”
“With the damage to your spin you will never be able to walk”

And for a moment the cynics may be right. Sometimes a long moment. But in time with persistence and faith the optimist tends to prevail.

The world ignores those before they become successful and achieve their goal so it’s very rare that we see our role models when they were failures. In the pre success period cynics will pounce and use as confirmation bias. But the truth is everyone is a failure… until they’re not.

One of my favorite examples is in the recommendation of the week as told by Casey Neistat.

Race: Chicago Marathon (Sunday October 13 2024)

A Note from Sophia

I am running the Chicago marathon in order to raise money for Good Sports, a national nonprofit that drives equitable access in youth sports and physical activity, by supporting children in high-need communities to achieve their greatest potential, on the field and in life. Good Sports works with companies like Nike and Under Armour to donate brand-new equipment, apparel and footwear to children and youth organizations across the country. Since its founding in 2003, Good Sports has supported 9.3 million children across all 50 states and in Puerto Rico.

Sports have played a major role in my life. I grew up swimming and playing soccer and through these sports I’ve gained the coolest and diverse friends and major valuable lessons that I hold and appreciate to this day. I'm grateful that access to sports and equipments has never been a roadblock for me; unfortunately, the cost to play keeps kids in need away from sports. That’s why I’ll be running the Chicago Marathon with Good Sports so I can bring awareness and run for equitable opportunities for kids.

My relationship with running has been quite a ride. I started running when COVID started with a bunch of friends. It was more of a hobby I started because it’s something everyone could do together, especially when indoor options were limited. In the past year, I’ve ran 2 half marathons, 2 10Ks and a 5k. What started as a group activity started picking up as a competition against myself. Chicago Marathon will be my first Marathon ever and to be quite honest, I’m a bit scared but also excited at the same time. Currently I’m training myself back up so I can pick up my mileage when the weather gets warmer. Really excited for what’s to come!!

Something We Learned this Week

Scientists have found evidence that plastics have infiltrated our bloodstreams from plastic utensils and food containers. This has implications that could allow blood to clot more easily and lead to additional health complications.

The recommended mitigation is avoid drinking and eating from plastic and to use glass whenever possible.
