Workout of the Week
In middle of marathon training I’ve been looking for things to do on my active rest days. Ethan, Marcelo, and I used to rip Les Mills GRIT over COVID.
Shout out to the folks over at Les Mills.

“Who do I want to be?” It’s a profound question, one that dives into the essence of identity and purpose. Our identity does more than just define us—it builds the context for our lives, shaping our perceptions of right and wrong and providing an omnipresent framework for our behavior and decisions.
To give you a clearer picture, let’s explore a few examples of identities:
Creative. A person who identifies as a creative might prioritize artistic expression, constantly seeking new ways to innovate and inspire through various mediums such as painting, writing, or music.
Athlete. Someone who sees themselves as an athlete may focus on physical fitness, discipline, and competition. Their routine often involves rigorous training, healthy eating, and a mindset geared towards achieving peak performance.
Entrepreneur. An individual with an entrepreneurial identity is driven by innovation, risk-taking, and the desire to build and grow businesses. They often possess a proactive mindset, always looking for opportunities to solve problems and create value.
Engineer. A person who identifies as an engineer values logic, problem-solving, and the application of scientific principles. Their approach to life often involves methodical thinking, precision, and a strong emphasis on practical solutions.
When we establish a clear identity, our brain gains a shortcut. Instead of deliberating over every action, we instinctively align our behaviors with our identity. This cognitive efficiency allows us to navigate life more smoothly, acting in ways that resonate with who we believe ourselves to be.
Identity doesn’t exist in isolation; it is intricately linked with community and culture. These elements often complement and reinforce each other. Take religion, for instance. Religion provides a profound sense of fellowship and belonging. When we immerse ourselves in a religious community, we adopt a lifestyle that is supported and reinforced by others who share our beliefs and values. This communal aspect of identity offers powerful support. It helps us stay true to our values and aspirations by providing both a sense of belonging and a shared set of norms and behaviors.
Define yourself or be defined. Unfortunately, if we aren’t intentionally and If we don’t take the time to define ourselves, the world will do it for us. External influences—be they societal expectations or peer pressure the seductive whispers of others can shape your path for you. Without a clear sense of self, you may find yourself drifting, influenced more by the tides of external opinion than by your own convictions.
